FED:Stricken yachtsman rescued off WA coast
MELBOURNE, Aug 2 AAP - A 62-year-old lone yachtsman has been rescued after getting
into difficulties in wild weather off the West Australian coast.
The Canadian was forced to abandon his yacht after its engine broke free of its mounting
in a heavy swell and high winds in the Southern Ocean late on Monday.
A search and rescue helicopter dropped off a radio and an extra liferaft to the yachtsman
as he waited for assistance from a Panama-registered bulk carrier, the Kohju.
The carrier arrived 140 nautical miles southwest of Cape Leeuwin off the West Australian
coast about 12.50am (AEST) on Tuesday and rescued the yachtsman from his 9.5-metre vessel,
Kekuli.
An Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) spokeswoman said because of the difficulty
of manoeuvering in heavy seas, it took around six hours to get the yachtsman safely on
board the carrier.
"The yacht was abandoned because it was not in good condition and was starting to sink,"
the spokeswoman said.
The bulk carrier is continuing to its original destination of Las Palmas in the Canary Islands.

Fed: Security changes will make airports stronger - govt
MELBOURNE, Dec 28 AAP - Changes to Australia's airport security, announced before an
alleged attempt to blow up a US airliner, will strengthen responses to terror threats,
the federal government says.
Nigerian man Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, has been charged with trying to blow up
the Airbus with an explosive device as the plane prepared to land in Detroit on Christmas
Day.
Speaking in Melbourne, Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said the government had
already announced changes to airport security before Christmas to deal with terror threats.
He said the changes included increasing the number of Australian Federal Police (AFP)
officers at Australia's major 11 airports instead of the current mix of commonwealth and
state police.
Mr O'Connor said the move would make security arrangements stronger.
"We believe having sworn federal police officers in the 11 airports will provide a
more co-ordinated approach, will ensure a more rapid response to emerging threats in our
airports," he said.
Mr O'Connor said the new model of airport security would be put in place over a five-year
period and phased in in co-operation with state and territory governments and their agencies.
He said the changes followed an audit by Roger Beale who considered the AFP's capacity
to meet future demands and government priorities.
"With these changes and the other measures in response to the Beale Audit, the government
will ensure the AFP, as the core commonwealth law enforcement agency, is well-equipped
to combat serious crime, terrorism and other security threats," Mr O'Connor said.
The changes to policing arrangements relate to the major airports in Adelaide, Alice
Springs, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Gold Coast, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and
Sydney.

Federal and state governments should investigate whether it is technically possible
to send warning messages to mobile phones, the second phase of a national telephony-based
warning system, by the 2009-10 bushfire season, the report says.
Guidelines should also be developed for the use of fire station sirens to alert communities
to the threat of bushfires.
The commissioners - chairman Bernard Teague, Susan Pascoe and Ron McLeod - also recommended
the Victorian government identify "neighbourhood safer places" for people to seek refuse
at during fires.
Victorian Premier John Brumby foreshadowed that recommendation last month when he announced
that work would get underway to identify "safer places".
The commissioners backed away from using the term evacuation, instead preferring to
use relocation.
Under the recommendations, incident controllers from the CFA and Department of Sustainability
and Environment should decide whether relocation is necessary, the report said.
The commission's final report is due to be handed down next July.

Fed: Opposition reluctant to lift foreign ownership limits
CANBERRA, Dec 3 AAP - The federal opposition is yet to be convinced about plans to
allow foreign airlines a bigger stake in Australian carriers.
British Airways has confirmed it is in merger talks with the Australian carrier.
The news came as the federal government indicated it was considering lifting from 35
per cent to 49 per cent the holding foreign airlines can have in local carriers.
The opposition wants the government to explain why the move would benefit Australia.
Opposition transport spokesman Warren Truss said British Airways once had a significant
shareholding in Qantas and that did not work.
"In the end BA sold down that shareholding in the interest of both airlines," he told ABC Radio.
"We'd need to know why this deal was better than the arrangement that was proposed
previously, and most importantly why it's better for Australia."

Vic: Man arrested over cabbie stabbing
By Kellee Nolan, Katie Bradford and Jamie Duncan
MELBOURNE, April 29 AAP - Detectives have charged a man with attempted murder over
the near-fatal stabbing of a young Indian taxi driver in Melbourne's inner north.
The victims, a 23-year-old Indian student who started driving taxis at night just weeks
ago, remains in a critical condition in the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
More than 1,000 people - many of them cab drivers - staged a sit-in at the corner of
Swanston and Flinders Streets, blocking the intersection, to support the driver and demand
better security in their taxis.
Police believe the driver got out of the taxi after being attacked and his assailant
then drove it a short distance before crashing the vehicle into a pole.
Late today, police announced they had arrested 45-year-old man at his home in Alphington
about 7.30pm (AEST).
Parish Charles of Alphington has been charged with attempted murder by Yarra CIU detectives.
He appeared before an out-of-sessions court hearing and was remanded in custody to
appear the Melbourne Magistrates' Court tomorrow (Wednesday).
Earlier, Senior Constable David Fitzgerald said the victim's family is in India.
Friends he lives with in Reservoir were today told of the stabbing.
"We believe at this stage he has no family in Australia, but friends were notified
and we believe they are making contact with his family," Snr Const Fitzgerald said.
He said the man had worked for a taxi company "for only a matter of weeks" and a taxi
owner at the scene today said he was "the nicest possible person to deal with".
"They're obviously very upset this has happened," Snr Const Fitzgerald said.
Police were called to the crashed taxi in Hodgkinson Street about 3am, but failed immediately
to find the injured driver, who was lying around the corner several hundred metres away.
He was found by two men passing just before 6am, covered in blood, with several stab
wounds to the upper body and chest area.
A paramedic attending said the driver was "in a bad way", disorientated and cold after
lying outside for almost three hours on a cold night.
"He was very confused, hypothermic, disorientated, not in a good condition at all," he said.
Victorian Taxi Drivers Association president Arun Badgujar today said the stabbing
had shaken all taxi drivers.
"Straight away you think, that could be me," Mr Badgujar said.
"I was at the airport this morning and everyone was talking about it. You think 'Why?'."
He said every weekend, between three and five drivers were seriously assaulted but
the attacks were rarely made public.
Mr Badgujar called for the state government to make new removable safety screens mandatory
and subsidise half the estimated $1,500 cost per taxi.
Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said the screens were being trialled and could
soon be introduced in taxis for drivers who want them.
"It's obviously a very distressing incident and it's certainly something that we're
very concerned about in terms of safety in taxis," Ms Kosky told reporters.

Tas: Slow progress on mine rescue overnight

Tas: Slow progress on mine rescue overnight
BEACONSFIELD, Tas, April 27 AAP - Rescuers trying to reach three miners trapped nearly
a kilometre underground in a Tasmanian gold mine have made slow progress overnight.
Beaconsfield Gold Mine management is expected to hold another media conference at 0700
(AEST) to update the public on the rescue mission.
But after 36 hours, fears are growing for the trapped miners - Todd Russell, Larry
Knight and Brant (Brant) Webb.
They became trapped after a minor earthquake triggered a rock fall at the Beaconsfield
Gold Mine at 9.30pm (AEST) on Tuesday night.
Fourteen other miners working underground made it to a safety chamber and escaped unscathed.
The 1,000-strong community of Beaconsfield, 40 km north-west of Launceston, has spent
an anxious night waiting for news.
"Unfortunately there's no new information coming out during the night," West Tamar
mayor Barry Easther told Channel Nine this morning.
"They are making progress ... I know they have been working very hard overnight to
try and get to the area where the trapped miners are."
He said the families, who are being cared for by counsellors, are desperate for news.
"The families are doing it pretty tough ... they will be getting very anxious and very
keen to get some information," he said.
"I don't think there is anything worse than having to wait for news of loved ones.
It's the not knowing that is the real difficultly for those families."
An earthmover, equipped with cameras and remotely-controlled, was to be sent into the
mine to try to dig its way through to the trapped men.
Mine manager Matthew Gill said yesterday that grave fears were held for the men, but
one ray of hope was that the mine's ventilation system was still working last night and
water supplies were not a concern.
All three men are experienced miners, and this improves their chances of survival,
Mr Gill agreed.

The Top 5 IT trends businesses need to know.(Biz Ledger)(Company rankings)
Byline: Kevin Doyle
The economy's dark side has completely redefined business today particularly small business IT where working smart is synonymous with survival. With that, gone are the days of relying on quick fix solutions and sheer grit. Companies boasting healthy bottom lines now are taking a completely different IT approach.
After delaying for many months, companies are investing in technology once again with significant business results. After all, the average technology decision affects many other parts of the company. Smart IT can mean more sales, better customer service and greater productivity. These companies are keeping things simple, employing a team approach, equipping their people with on-the-go tech tools and reaping the advantages of cloud computing and virtualization.
And you can too.
Here are the top 5 IT trends small businesses need to know about:
1) Simplicity is King. Keep things simple. Many companies patch their business together through different applications. Consequence? Employees are forced to learn multiple systems and key data into each of them. Worst of all, applications don't "talk" to each other. This undermines access to vital data that could help your management staff make better decisions. Consolidating technology keeps it simple, minimizes costs and makes for happier employees. Pick one or two applications that can run your entire business and go for it.
When it comes to purchasing hardware, software, apps or services, talk to references and make people bullet- proof their product or service. It's normal to feel like you have to fix technology problems immediately. Short-term fixes, however, always cost more. Look at the big picture and anticipate growth for at least the next five years.
2) Understand the Cloud. Everyone is talking about cloud computing, a term synonymous with the Internet. Public clouds afford access to multiple people while private clouds are exclusive to a company's proprietary data centers. Moving your services from your office to a subscription cloud-based service turns capital purchases into operating expenses. Cash is king in the new economy, and cloud computing responds by charging companies for only what they use on a monthly basis.
So, should you move your entire business to the cloud? Consider your phone system, backups, SPAM-filtering, website hosting and web-based applications. Yes, everything will eventually move to the cloud. As ultra-high speed bandwidth and fiber become more available, circuit fees associated to connecting your systems to a public or private cloud will decrease and significantly increase the speed at which cloud computing grows. This concept has already started and Google is leading the charge in Kansas City. Although just a beta test for now, the company is providing a gigabit fiber network 100 times faster than the speed of a T1 line (1.544 MPS) u without added cost. In the same way that the transition from dial-up to broadband made possible the emergence of online video and countless other applications, ultra high-speed bandwidth will drive more innovation u in high-definition
video, remote data storage, real-time multimedia collaboration, and others that we cannot yet imagine.
3) Think Mobile. With 306,554 iPhone apps and counting, the world is going mobile and you should too. In fact, more people are using mobile device apps over their mobile device browsers.
Mobile computing offers tremendous productivity allowing employees to access files, respond to emails and work more efficiently from anywhere Internet access is available. Question: Could you run your company without anyone in the office? During the blizzard in February, we tapped the power of our hosted VOIP phone system; our cloud-based Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software; and the company's secure Virtual Private Network (VPN). So, while many workers sat in their cars on the highway, we ran our company seamlessly from the comfort of our homes. Without a single person in the office, our business ran like we were all there. Think mobile when you are considering purchasing a new software application, email platform, or
phone system. You will be amazed at what is available in the marketplace today.
4) Team Approach Saves Money. Typically, technology responsibilities fall on one outside expert working solo or someone inside a company. The latter is that one lucky person typically the controller, office manager or even owner charged with knowing everything from workstation management to slaying viruses to dealing with chaos when the computers go down. The problem is that one person cannot be an expert on every IT issue.
For a fraction of a full-time employee's salary, hiring a team of IT experts gives you 24/7/365 network monitoring, an on-site help desk, after-hours support, an annual network assessment, and definitive answers on your hardware/software needs. This proactive approach reduces system downtime, allows you to focus on your core business, and helps you plan and budget for your IT needs year over year.
5) Virtualization. In the recent past a company's server could handle a maximum of 4GB of RAM. Once the server hit this threshold the company would need to purchase another server to offload applications that needed additional resources. As you can imagine this started to get quite expensive. Today, many small businesses are upgrading their IT infrastructure and using virtualization as a means to consolidate the number of physical servers needed to support their network environment. Virtualization is a method of running multiple independent virtual operating systems on a single physical computer. It is a way of maximizing physical resources to maximize the investment in hardware. For mission critical applications virtual servers can be replicated on two physical servers to eliminate any potential downtime. The two servers are constantly in sync with one another and can failover from one to the other in the event of a disaster. For these reasons, virtualization should always be something to consider as a part of every IT upgrade in the future.

CCNY-LED TEAM GETS $3M FOR NORTHEAST EARTH SYSTEM MODEL.
NEW YORK -- The following information was released by The City College of New York:
An interdisciplinary team of researchers led by Dr. Charles V|r|smarty, professor of civil engineering in the Grove School of Engineering at The City College of New York, was awarded $3 million from the National Science Foundation to develop a regional earth system model of the Northeast. The effort involves partner institutions from around the region, including Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Mass.
The proposed model will depict the coupled atmosphere-land-water system of a 10-state region stretching from Maine to Pennsylvania and Delaware, and link this to an economic analysis and policy-formulating process. It would improve current capacity to forecast the benefits as well as unintended consequences of planning decisions about the region's environment, ecosystem services, energy systems and economy through the 21st Century.
"We don't want to judge. Rather, we to empower policymakers with sound information so that they can decide," says Professor V|r|smarty, the project's principal investigator says. Co-principal investigators are:
* Dr. Jerry Mellio, co-director and senior scientist, The Ecosystems Center, Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole, Mass.
* Dr. Faye Duchin, professor of economics, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, N.Y.
* Dr. Wilfred Wollheim, assistant professor, Department of Natural Resources and Environment, and co-director, Water Systems Analysis Group, University of New Hampshire, Durham, N.H.
* Dr. Jorge Gonz[sz]lez, NOAA-CREST Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Grove School of Engineering, The City College of New York.
The eastern seaboard's landscapes and watersheds have experienced every stage of human environmental transformation that has occurred in the United States, from settlement and deforestation to growth of mega-cities and post-industrialization. Such changes, which the team views as persisting well into the future, will become more difficult to manage as the region experiences rapidly changing climate, Professor V|r|smarty contends.
The project will study the region's atmosphere, land and aquatic systems, which are closely linked, with an eye toward how changes to any of them hold potential for system-wide feedbacks, thresholds and unintended consequences. "We want to create an accounting system for these ecosystems so we can anticipate what happens when they are coupled together," Professor V|r|smarty explains.
For example, the project would attempt to model the impact of carbon sequestration strategies on the region's water supply and hydropower potential. If planners want to increase local agriculture to reduce the carbon footprint of freight transportation, they will need, at the same time, to understand the effects of increased fertilizer runoff and sediment.
"No one has ever examined these multiple causes and effects together. We want to formally create a mechanism that will enable planners to do so," he adds. "I am hoping we can achieve the end result, but, at a minimum, we will create a framework for finding the answers."
The project, which is funded over three years, will also provide graduate and undergraduate students with experience using MARKAL, a modeling system used for long-range economic forecasts. Ariel Miara, an entering graduate student working on the project who earned his bachelor's degree at University of London, said he was attracted by the opportunity to work with MARKAL.
"I'm developing simple models to predict the consequences of decisions that may need to be addressed through policy," he says. "We're looking at environmental and energy planning systems as a tool so that we will be able to anticipate things that could go wrong before they do."

Good skills will take a fisherman right through the winter months.
Snapper fishing is changing with the season and there are two main options available for those looking for a feed of fresh fish.
At the height of summer, the choices are pretty straightforward _ do you fish in the harbour in Whangarei, Auckland or Tauranga; or do you burn a little more gas and head for the channels where the tide rips through and you always catch fish?
Now, as waters cool and fish move out to the warmer depths, the choices vary a little. One option is to stick around the rocky shallows and fish unweighted baits on light line. This works through summer also, but takes a little more investment of effort than that involved in dropping ledger rigs in the channel. But it works right through the winter, so is a good skill to develop. It is similar to the approach of the soft bait aficionados. In summer, they do well working the channels like the bait fishermen and, in winter, they also do well throwing lures into the white water and the wash around the rocky edges.
The other option at the moment is to head out into deep water, when weather conditions allow, and fish where the action with birds and dolphins can be found, or fish where bottom contours change.
But straylining in the shallows is always a good option. It works all around our coasts wherever current is flowing past a rocky point or reef. Keep away from sheltered bays, for current is the key. Positioning the boat is critical and it changes with the tides. Some spots only fish on certain tides and going out with somebody experienced in this style of fishing is a good start to learning the ropes. Berley is the other essential, and this is where the boat position is so important. You want your berley flowing into a jumble of rocks, guts and weed beds; not straight out to sea. Then the style of fishing is different from summer bottom dunking, which involves just sitting and waiting. In fact, it often works best with the rod in a rod holder.
Straylining is active fishing. Unless targeting big snapper at places like the top end of the Coromandel Peninsula or around Great Barrier Island, you don't need a trace. The small baits used work better without the weight of a heavy trace and sinker. They should float in the current, with a hook tied to the end of the 6kg or 10kg main line it works fine. The increased number of bites more than make up for the odd lost fish. Sometimes a small ball sinker is needed to get the bait down in strong currents.
Baits are cast away from the boat in a semicircle to cover the water and bait-feeder type spin reels are ideal. Baits are simply chunks of pilchard or cubes of fish or squid, and because the snapper are often not actively feeding in the cold water they will pick at the bait rather than smash it. So keeping in touch with the line is important and moving the bait occasionally to keep it out of the weed also helps. Let the fish nibble on the bait then, when the weight of the fish can be felt, strike quickly and hard, winding while lifting the rod. It is a technique that can take time to master, but is all about feeling the line which is held over a finger to detect the smallest touch.
It often surprises people just how big a fish results from soft nibbles which appear to be only small ones.
A continuous flow of berley is important, and two berleys can be deployed to get things started. If bites stop, it is usually because the berley has run out, or the tide has turned. This approach has been producing well along the eastern shoreline of Rangitoto Island, on the seaward side of Kawau and Tiritiri Matangi Islands. So is casting green soft baits on light jig heads in the same areas. At Little Barrier Island fishing on the sand in 10-15m along the edge of kelp beds in the first hour after the tide turns is working well, with plenty of snapper in the 35cm range but not a lot of big fish.
Trout anglers on the Rotorua lakes are waiting for frosts to kick start the fly fishing, and rainbows to 6kg have been reported.
More fishing action can be found on Rheem Outdoors with Geoff, 5pm TV3, and on the new internet television channel, www.FishnHunt.Tv.

Sezmi touts all-in-one box.
Seeking to capitalize on the era of flux and consumer dissatisfaction with TV and homevid offerings, a new company launching Thursday believes it has the next-gen solution.
Sezmi is backed by a consortium of venture capital funds and features execs and board members with experience at Sony, Viacom, NBC, Bell Labs and other companies. It features a single set-top box and remote that bring together broadcast, cable, movies and Internet videos.
Using an iPod-like track wheel, the remote allows the user to scroll through options, while the box uses an antenna to pull in wireless signals from cable and Web sources. The interface also encourages social networking by allowing users to recommend shows, movies or videos to friends.
The system differs from Internet Protocol TV, or IPTV, in that it does not require major investment in infrastructure. The company, formerly known as Building B, expects pilot market tests to start later this year.
"To deliver the full range of content that consumers expect at an affordable cost, we had to create a network that overcame the limitations of broadband and better aligned with mass market content consumption," said Phil Wiser, Sezmi co-founder and prexy and formerly Sony's chief technology officer. "Our integrated solution seamlessly combines the efficiency and scale of broadcast delivery with the interactivity and access of broadband. As a result, we are able to deliver a next-generation television experience to a much larger group of consumers, and we can do it today."
Sezmi's FlexCast video distrib technology combines terrestrial digital broadcast television with existing broadband infrastructure to cost effectively deliver video content.
Sezmi also uses an antenna-based indoor reception system that makes both its private broadcast and existing terrestrial TV broadcasts accessible. The networked reception system can sit in any location in the home, requires no adjustment by the user and can be installed without a service call.
The system uses available capacity in existing digital TV broadcast networks and creates a private, secure broadcast transmission for content. The company is in talks with programmers, advertisers and Websites about content deals, but its technology will allow it to hit the ground running, unlike a new telco, satellite or cable offering. Financial backers include Morgenthaler Ventures, Omni Capital, Index Ventures, TD Fund, Legend Ventures and Western Technology Investments.
The company's chief content officer is Perry Simon, a showbiz vet whose background includes exec producing sci-fi series "The 4400" founding and running TV supplier Shore View, and stints at Viacom Prods. and NBC. On its board of directors is Andy Lack, former NBC chief operating officer and now chairman of Sony BMG.

Cool replacement
Will the Refrigerators double their gigs in 2007 when the Burners U.K. go on hiatus for an indeterminate period of time? Not to say the two bands are identical, but the horn-laden good time party rockers have set lists, musical influences, past and present band members and rabid fans in common. See how much so when all the members team up for the "Fire 'N Ice" concert at Northern Lights in Clifton Park on Saturday, Dec. 9. And take notice, too, of all the differences when they each perform solo sets and then come together for a big band blowout.
Add food to admission WEQX holds its annual "Non-Conformal Ball" at Revolution Hall in Troy on Saturday, Dec. 16. The admission price goes beyond mere dollars; you are asked to also bring two cans of nonperishable food to help feed the needy during the holidays. Here's hoping they are providing the treadmills because no matter what your appreciation level for the infectious power pop of headliner OK GO , you know you will be greatly disappointed if they don't perform "Here It Goes Again" just like the Internet phenomenon video. Also performing - with what electronic exercise equipment we know not - are As Fast As , Bangkok 5 and Pilot Speed .
Also at Revolution Hall, the Benevento/Russo Duo close out the year with a New Year's Eve show. The jazz-rock twosome are favorites of the jam crowd so expect the song they are playing at midnight to take you well, well into 2007. And all with no guitars or basses, although they may sneak one in here and there.

Cable, Web ad it up: broadcast nets boost product placement.
Spanish-language media, cable and the Net boosted ad spending by 5.7% in the first half of the year.
Newspapers rose a hair, while top 100 spot TV markets and net-work radio slumped, according to stats released Tuesday by Nielsen Media research. Firm said spending was livelier in the second quarter than the first.
With traditional commercial spots under attack by digital video recorders and the Internet, product placement showed significant growth, Nielsen said, with top 10 brands, led by Coca-Cola, appearing 11,455 times in primetime.
"The Contender" boasted the lion's share, with 7,521 "occurrences," as Nielsen calls them. "American Idol," "Amazing Race," "What I Like About You," "The Apprentice," "The Road to Stardom With Missy Elliott," "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "King of Queens," "Fear Factor" and "America's Next Top Model" rounded out the top 10.
Top products placed also included Everlast Apparel, Gatorade, Toyota, Nike, Sierra Mist soda, Home Depot and Foot Locker.
Nielsen didn't provide year-earlier figures on product placement.
About 15,800 commercials aired 4.8 million times from January to June to generate $25 billion. Some 4.3 million of those airings were on cable, garnering $10.9 billion. Broadcasters took in $11.8 billion from 240,758 spots.
Overall, ad spending on Spanish-language television rose a hefty 15%; cable grew 13%; and the Internet jumped 12.6% year-on-year.
Local magazine spend rose 8.7%, and national climbed 7.9%; outdoor advertising grew 6.9%; and network television was up 4.9%.
Top 100 spot TV spending slipped 0.6%. But spending in smaller markets (Nos. 101-210) rose 3.5%.
Local and national newspaper advertising rose 1.8% and 1.1%, respectively. Network radio eased 0.8%.
Spending by the top 10 advertisers reached $9.5 billion, a 7.7% increase from last year.
General Motors overtook Procter & Gamble with a 14.2% increase and Ford drove up 10.5%. DaimlerChrysler cut spending by 7.8%.
H'wood cutting back
Hollywood cut back, as spending in the film industry eased by 3%.
Credit card services grew fastest by category with a 24.5% spike.
Nielsen noted that its online spending figures reflect CPM-based advertising only and exclude search-based advertising, campaigns and sponsorships. Newspaper data reflect display ads only. Nielsen said it omitted spot radio and syndicated television due to changes in tracking.

For Notre Dame, it's time for real work.
Byline: Bill Jauss
DENVER_The fun's over. For the Notre Dame women's team, the hard work of the NCAA tournament begins Saturday.
After scoring 98 and 88 points last weekend, the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Regional now faces the nation's stingiest defense in No. 5-seeded Utah.
"I don't know if I've ever seen a team play defense as they do," Irish coach Muffet McGraw said of the Utes, who hold teams to 49 points per game. "Their help-out defense is tremendous."
Utah, coached by Elaine Elliott, excels at playing defenders in passing lanes, where they create turnovers. Utah also takes away teams' running games and makes them set up in half-court sets.
McGraw said Utah's defense reminds her of Big East rival Rutgers. Rutgers dealt the Irish one of their two losses this season, a 55-54 decision.
Utah started the season by going on the road and holding two top teams, UCLA and Iowa, to 42 points each. The Utes rarely let up. Their leading defender is 6-foot senior guard Amy Ewert, who averages 3.5 steals per game.
Elliott said the toughest job for her defense Saturday will be trying to limit the production of Ruth Riley, Notre Dame's 6-5 All-America center, who has averaged 18 points per game and hit 64 percent of her shots.
"Riley can't be left just to play one-on-one all night, because she could score 70 points," Elliot said.
"You can't just double-team her either and assume that the next pass won't burn you, because she is a great passer.
"We just have to get a couple of things done at once and hope that they're not going to get the best looks possible."
Utah is likely to double down on Riley in the post while Ewert pays special attention to the nation's best three-point shooter, Alicia Ratay, who will try to square up behind the three-point arc.
But even if Utah holds Riley in check and curtails Ratay, who has made 54 percent of her three-point shots, that could leave open Niele Ivey, Kelley Siemon or Ericka Haney. All five Irish starters average 11 points or more per game.
"They can't double- or triple-team Ruth without paying for it," Siemon said. "We have too many capable scorers."
Notre Dame's ace in the hole could be its own defense.
Led by Riley, averaging three blocked shots a game and intimidating even more from her zone near the basket, the Irish finished among the nation's defensive leaders with a yield of 54.7 points per game. Ivey is the backcourt leader with 79 steals.
"We were close to Utah all year in team defense," McGraw said. "It looks like it's going to be a close, low-scoring game. Our defense could be the difference."
Irish seniors Ivey, Riley and Siemon have all played extensively Denver's altitude. Each assures it will not be a factor.
"I played eight or 10 AAU games in a week here my junior year in high school," Ivey said. "You just have to drink lots of fluids. My mother told me at the end of the week, `You look tired.' But I wasn't."

PINKSHEETS: WRIT
Writer Group Film Corp. has acquired over 1800 hours of 2D/3D concert video footage from a concert library.
- - March 10, 2011 - - Writer Group Film Corp. (OTCQB:WRIT), a Los Angeles based concert production company, has acquired over 1800 hours of 2D/3D concert video footage from a concert library.
"By acquiring this catalogue, Front Row Networks is moving closer to its goal of providing the largest selection and variety of 2D and 3D concert footage to its viewing public," says John Diaz, CEO of Front Row Networks. The current worldwide phenomenon surrounding 3D, combined with the strong-performing live concert business, presents a unique opportunity for Front Row Networks to provide an inexpensive, state-of-the-art, live 3D concert experience to anyone, anywhere in the world.
This footage will enable Front Row to assemble and produce 12-15 theatrical releases (90 to 120 minutes in length) in 3D, which it will then put into an existing pipeline for distribution. These releases will be exhibited in North America and Overseas, resulting in direct revenues for the Company.
Following the initial theatrical run, the 3D concerts will be licensed to TV broadcasters and DVD retailers. In addition, Management intends to sell merchandising and sponsorship, specific to each artist in the concert, in theaters where the concert will be exhibited.
The Company intends to produce twelve 3D concerts in 2011, and increase this number by two concerts in each of the following years, for a total of 20 concerts by the fifth year.
The projections assume an average theater capacity of 250 seats. Based upon a 1000 theater release, in the US only, with attendance at 50% of seating capacity and an average ticket price of $25 USD, the financial model assumes theatrical revenue of approximately $1.5 million.
If the Project achieves this performance level, Management projects that the ancillary markets, including TV, DVD, merchandising, and sponsorship will add an additional $2 million in revenue per concert to the Company's revenue stream.
Based on these assumptions, the company projects gross profits (before artist split) in excess of $35 million based upon twelve performances.
John Diaz concluded, "This is a project we have been working on for some time and are very pleased to see it being realized. We continue to negotiate with new Artists to bring them into our production slate, and will continue to update our shareholders as these exciting events unfold."
About WRIT: Front Row Networks is a live concert production and distribution company which produces live concerts in 3D for initial digital broadcast into movie theaters in North America. Following their theatrical run, the films are then licensed to US and international broadcasters, pay channels, PPV markets, DVD and Blu-Ray distributors, and sold on the internet as downloads.
