Computer gamers warned after hack attack

Tens of thousands of people may have fallen victim to internethackers in the latest major cyber attack on a computer games giant.

Personal details, potentially including names, addresses, phonenumbers and dates of birth, were stolen during the Codemasterssecurity breach, which came after a spate of similar break-ins,including two against Sony.

The company has now taken its website off-line following theintrusion last Friday. A subsequent investigation revealedpasswords, IP addresses, XBox gamer tags and biographies were alsostolen.

Codemasters said it had emailed every customer ever registered onthe site in the wake of the data theft. It insisted no paymentdetails had been compromised.

In a letter of apology for the security breach, the firm urgedusers to be "extra cautious of potential scams, via email, phone, orpost that ask you for personal or sensitive information".

"Unfortunately, Codemasters is the latest victim in ongoingtargeted attacks against numerous game companies."

"We assure you that we are doing everything within our legalmeans to track down the perpetrators and take action to the fullextent of the law.

"We apologise for this incident and regret any inconveniencecaused. We are contacting all customers who may have been affecteddirectly."

Website users were also urges to change any passwords which were"associated with other Codemasters accounts".
