Fed: New report points to arts recovery

A new report shows the arts industry boosted the number of bums on seats last yearto recover from a slump blamed on the GST and the Olympics the previous year.

The annual Sweeney Arts Report for 2001 shows the industry has more than made up forlosses suffered in 2000 to post substantial gains in attendance across 14 of the 22 activitiescovered.

The report shows movies remain the overwhelming choice of arts entertainment for Australians,with more than eight out of 10 people taking in at least one movie a year.

But patrons have also increased the frequency of those cinema outings to 11.4, 1.1more times per head of population than in 2000.

Live bands remain the second most popular choice, with 51 per cent of the populationheading off to see bands over 2001.

Public art galleries, public shows such as agricultural and home shows, and live theatreare also popular, with public art galleries recording the equal highest increase.
