Fed: HMAS Sydney departs for Persian Gulf today
The guided missile frigate HMAS Sydney will leave Australia's shores this morning tojoin the war on Iraq.
The frigate, with 230 crew and a Seahawk helicopter on board, will replace HMAS Anzacand HMAS Darwin, which are due to return home next month.
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD, Governor-General PETER HOLLINGWORTH, Opposition leaderSIMON CREAN, Chief of the Defence Force PETER COSGROVE and Chief of the Navy CHRIS RITCHIEwill farewell the ship at Garden Island in Sydney.
Defence Minister ROBERT HILL says the ship is due to depart at 10am (AEST) bound forthe Persian Gulf where it will join HMAS Kanimbla.
Last week Senator HILL announced the scaling down of Australia's naval involvementin the war with the return of HMAS Anzac and Darwin.
